Building on the opportunities which were presented in the last quarter of 2023, a comprehensive plan was formulated by DOMLEC in the first quarter of 2024, outlining an approach to stabilise generation capacity. This plan included the installation and commissioning of the 3 x 1.6 MW units leased to the company by the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, improved maintenance scheduling of existing generators, as well as securing the efficient deployment of the 3 MW of leased generation capacity. Instances of adverse climatic conditions and supply issues
with the procurement of spare parts did affect the generating fleet, however DOMLEC was able to provide a more reliable service to its customers in
2024 than in the previous year.

The advent of geothermal power is a significant milestone in the company’s transition to 100% renewable generation by 2030 and in 2024 important advancements were made on critical projects complementary to the geothermal project. The contract for the construction of the transmission line (69kV/33kV) to evacuate power from the geothermal power plant to the Fond Cole power station, was signed in September, and initial survey and mobilisation works was started in December. Construction of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) site also commenced in September. This has been a challenging time for technical staff as they have been fully engaged on both of these projects while continuing to conduct their usual duties and we thank them for their dedication and commitment. The BESS and the transmission lines are important for bolstering the reliability of existing generation capacity, as well as preparing our system for the off take of geothermal power.
